Contemporary Living Rooms
Smart, Stylish, Modern and Practical.

Contemporary Living Rooms are stylish and practical for modern living.

My aim is to show you how you can create your own modern living rooms, on a budget using great accessories and furnishings.

Styling A Contemporary Living Room

1. Keep living room ideas simple, do not over clutter.

2. Walls and floors should be decorated in neutral tones.

3. If you want to use wallpaper choose plain or paint effect designs.

4. Keep furniture simple, with clean lines. Modern style furniture and more old fashioned square box shape is fine. Remember pale wood is preferred.

5. Contemporary style also involves the use of black wrought iron, glass and metal.

6. Use rugs in modern designs and colors.

7. Remember this style is based on simple lines where the focus is on color and texture not pattern.

8. Storage should be modular or even industrial.

9. Lighting should be modern, down lights are great, free stand alone lights should be metallic modern designs, smooth lamps with large flat shades.

Modern Living Rooms 1

This is a lovely fresh clean contemporary living room. The lemon and olive colored sofas are modern and combine beautifully with the neutral floorboards and simple white coffee table. Color and added pizazz are given with the use of a bright modern orange/red mat.

Modern Living Rooms 2

This modern living room can easily be recreated.

Start with the basics; leave walls plain and add a couple of white modern chairs. Add a honey coloured bookcase (If you own your own home you can buy budget wall shelves from Ikea and set them on the wall as in the picture.) On bookshelf place ornaments, black frames are easy to find and add some bright orange cushions and ornaments.

Add a couple of stools/ottomans in your chosen accent colour.

If you do not like bright orange as an accent colour try adding blue or red.(Photo courtesy of Flickr: girasoles19)

Modern Living Rooms 3

This modern living room design uses neutral colors of brown, beige, cream and pale steel blue. A contemporary modern painting has been added to create pizazz and vibrancy. Two lamps of the same style give the room balance and add interest. A rough white rug adds texture and interest to the smooth floorboards. (Photo courtesy of Flickr: holly-bartos)

Modern Living Rooms 4

This simple pale L-shape lounge is the basis for this contemporary living room design. A striped contemporary rug has been placed underneath and a green ottoman has been included.

Cushions in brown and deep green have been included and a geometric modern print cushion adds further interest. A bright modern piece of art work hangs on the wall behind. A plain rug draped over the back of the sofa completes the overall contemporary design. (photo courtesy of Flickr chapstick-addict)

Modern Living Rooms 5

This lovely modern living room is spacious and inviting. The contemporary look is achieved by combining a white sofa with floorboards, modern lighting, a modern rug and wooden table.

Further interest, texture and color is added through using indoor plants. The terracotta pots work in beautifully with the decor. A cello in one corner gives a lovely personal touch. (Photo courtesy of Flickr: laineydyer)
